14 Pathfinder – heater never really heating up? Common issue?

Posting this for my Girlfriend. She’s got a 14 Pathfinder that seems to definitely have an issue. I didn’t really know how bad it was until we talked more in depth about it the other day. Her pathfinder heating system never seems to heat up much. It’s been very cold here so it’s definitely more evident now (it’s been averaging about 10-15 degrees F for the last couple weeks). For example, she warmed up her car for 15 minutes, set the heat on max, drove to another city that was 1.5 hours away and the car barely heated up. She said she never turned down the heat (set at 90 w/ max fan). Her car heats up enough to assist in defrosting but its coolish air blowing out. It’s especially noticeable in her foot area. She says her toes are constantly freezing and she never feels warm air down there. In the time we’ve been together I’ve had two 5th Gen Toyota 4Runners (2010 SR5 and 2016 Trail) and it’s night and day for her. 15 mins of max heat from a cold start and it’s sweltering in my rig (old and new). She’s really frustrated with it.

She doesn’t have a lot of money or time to take it to the dealership so no one has looked at it yet. I decided to investigate this for her, as she’ll probably just live with it. She get's overwhelmed by it and seems to get frustrated when dealing with stuff like this. Are heater issues common? Any easy fix or something to look for with these types of issues? I did a little Googling and it seems like there were some heat issues that were semi commonly reported.

I asked about the warranty but she did not know. What kind of warranty does Nissan have standard? She bought this car lightly used about 1.5 years ago (I think).

Thanks!

first thing to check.... is the engine getting up to normal temps. does the gauge on dash show in the middle of the band. does the coolant in the bottle look ok? clean?

if the eng is getting to normal temps then its a problem in the dash. most likely a blend door problem. but also could be a plugged up heater core. less likely but possible a bad temp sensor in the duct.

if the engine is not getting up to normal temps then a thermostat. another symptom of engine not getting up to normal temp is bad fuel economy.

having the heat set on max would probably mean it is not a sensor in the duct work but the other suggestions are all a possibility.

It may also mean that the car is low on coolant and the heater core is higher up in the system. check the collant in the overflow bottle but also in the radiator itself. Make sure the car is cold when you check the radiator. I'm not too familiar with the pathfinders (just joined the club a few weeks ago) but there may be a bleed valve for the cooling system to help get air out.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I have not had access to the car for a few days. These are some things I was also thinking about. My first thought was going to be a coolant system flush (she gets basic cheap oil changes only) and I doubt it was ever looked at or flushed.

Oddly enough though, while searching I stumbled upon a post where someone in a pathfinder had almost the exact same issue. They fixed it by just turning on the back seat heat. The air blowing out the front vents turned from luke warm/cold to hot. I had her try that and she said it's getting really warm now. Not sure why that would work, doesn't seem right. I suspect there is still some issue - possibly sensor or electrical related. Anyone heard of that before?

Hi there, is anyone still active on this thread. I have the exact same problem with my 2015 Plationum Pathfinder, and I've been to the dealer half a dozen times to be told, "its normal sir, they're all like that" as their response.

Turning on the rear vents does nothing, actually.. doing so actually shuts the rear ventilation almost off!! but again, "its normal sir, they're all like that" is the response i get.

Does anyone have a documented fix to this problem

Thanks

Thanks, but the problem seems much more complex.. I have mediocre heat during accelaration, and at idle my heat slowly drops to the point where its just warm. I've had two heater core flushes and i get good heat after that, but it only lasts one trip, then the heat disappears again. The dealer says they are all like that and no problem found.

If i didnt owe $35k on it, i would trade the **** thing in.. I'm beyond disappointed with it.

So people with crap rear heat, it looks like for rear heating in the 14 pathfinder at least, it uses a PTC Heater, so if you aren't getting heat, this is probably cactus.

For the front heating, it uses a heater core, so if you aren't getting good heat in the front, then probably a cactus heater core.

Look for the service manuals, search on here and you will find them, then look under the HA section, for HEATER & AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM, will have troubleshooting and diagnostics for both these

I don't know that to be true with the rear HVAC on any 2013+ Pathfinder. Diagrams I've seen show a rear heater core and evaporator core. I have seen reference to an electric (PTC) heater that's supposed to take up the slack when the coolant temp is cold.

Regardless, the HVAC system is pretty complex on the PF. There's 3 blower assemblies. One in the dash, one in the center console and one in the back.

Here is a link to some service manuals @Bushman provided in another thread

Could very well be. I'll have to do some more poking around, although I think that pic you shared is the center console blower, not the one in the back.

I'm pretty sure I came across coolant and refrigerant lines running to the right rear corner of the vehicle when I've been underneath.

Here is exploded view of the back one, someone forgot to add a PTC to that one when it was design day, wouldn't have taken much to have run some underfloor or headroom ducting to get some heat back there from the front as i have seen other manufacturers do.
