Awesome thread! I just finished swapping a DD for a customer of mine today. I told the customer to make sure to get the lowest mileage engine they could find since they didnt like my price of $4500 for a replacement. Turns out the one he purchased from Knox Auto parts had 151,000 miles and the timing chain is rattling like hell. So ive wasted a week dropping the old motor which had sludge problems at 91k miles and putting in a motor that needs a timing job done anyways. A quick inspection with my borescope shows that the new engine doesnt seem to be sludged up, but its still going to have to come back out to do the timing job(IMO much less of a chance to have something timed wrong with the engine out of the car). Doing some quick searching about possibly putting a DE in led me to your thread. It appears to be more than what im willing to do for a customer, but I did have a couple questions for you. Forgive me if i missed the answers to these quesions.
1 which harness did you end up using? it appears to be the DD harness but just wanted to make sure. and if so what did you do with the injector wiring?
2 which ecu did you end up putting in it currently? I saw where you were having to reprogram the EEPROM chip with the VIN for the DE ecu, but then i also saw that you said you had to remove the 17 ecu to put the airbox in. And you said something about its amazing what the right ecu will do for the power steering pump. Did you end up using the original DD ecu to get the power steering pump to work? I could be completely misreading it but that kind of threw me for a loop.
my hopes was that i could just drop the DE engine in, use the DD harness and ECU, repin the injector plugs and harness if need be, and use all of the DD sensors on the DE engine. the only thing i could think of that wouldnt have a signal would be the fuel pressure sensor. but unfortunately reading through your journey it doesnt appear that that is going to work at all.
Thanks again for the write up, and best of luck figuring out your EVAP issues. I have access to Alldata if you need some Non OE wiring diagrams for anything feel free to shoot me a message.
