Hey folks

Have had my 2014 for a year and a half now. Last night had a crapload of freezing rain and when opening it to load the stroller the tailgate banged into the ice and re closed it with a few beeps. After that it would go to the top, beep and close again anytime we opened it. We tried cleaning the roof and sensors but it didn't work. After reading this thread I opened it, caught it and held it when it started to close, and stopped the mechanism. I then held the tailgate close button for five seconds and heard a few beeps and let go and it's now working fine. Thanks all

All great info and good to see this topic being discussed in the forum. This liftgate issue started happening to me this past weekend. Taking it into the dealer today.

All - just wanted to give an update. Took the Pathfinder to the dealership for a quick service and to have Doug (great service technician) look at the liftgate. He showed me an easy fix that works "most" of the time. 1) Turn the power-lift gate Off (by the steering column). 2) Manually open and then manually close the liftgate. 3) Manually open the liftgate again. 4) With the liftgate open, press and hold the power liftgate button on the liftgate itself until you hear a couple beeps. 5) Turn the power-lift gate On (by the steering column).

This fix has worked for me so far.

I just joined this forum for this problem.
My 2014 had been to the dealership twice to reset the trunk. I went again this morning and the tech simply pressed the close button down for a few seconds until two beeps were heard.
This is what he says Nissan (who are aware of this issue) have told dealerships to do.
Annoying and dangerous!
This worked for me! Thank you for sharing!

Ok, here's the easy way.

Mine seems to forget how far it can actually go every once in a while, so it thinks it can open further but something is obstructing it's path, so it tries to close.

Whenever it starts to close, I just hit the anti-smash sensors (they look like an extra tube seal on the side of the tailgate where it meets the body of the vehicle).

Since now it stops so it doesn't smash your fingers, I can position it where it's supposed to be and then hold the close button till it beeps.

It remembers the new location until the next time it gets memory loss.

Just make sure you hit that finger sensor while it's in motion, not actually about to close.
Don't want to take a chance of the sensor malfunctioning....

I just purchased a 2014 pre-owned PF and am so excited! However, It did have the lift gate issue where it would automatically come down on it's own after opening. Followed the instruction on this form to reset it and seemed to work. So glad it was a relatively simple fix! Thank you!

Just got a 2013 PF. The couple times it opened a little I had to force it to open any more. Then it opened like an inch and closed. Now lift gate won't respond at all. Not even manually. Only the liftgate switch worked. Never any response at all using the fob or the dashboard switch.

I've had the same issue with my 2017 - started within 2 months after i bought it and they 'still' haven't fixed it...

Now I understand a little better what is going on. As long as I turn the door power off, I can reliably unlatch and open it manually using a great deal of force. Turns out there is only one power strut left (left side) and that one is hanging on by one loose bolt.

Looks like this strut (90560-3KA0A) was only used for the 2013 model and it's discontinued. I'll call my local Nissan dealer on Monday and see what they say. I don't suppose the inexpensive non-power struts can be substituted.

This PF is basically an as-is auction flip, so I'm not surprised to find problems. Just wish the dealer that sold it to me had told me up-front.

Thanks for your advice, I did what ever you suggested on my Nissan Rogue 2018 and it helped!

Curious if you have any updates, I'm having an issue finding another strut for my 2013 as well. One morning as I walked towards my pathfinder I could see a gap in the back lift gate at the top, so I opened the gate and found that the ball joint had snapped off, rusted through and the strut was pushing the gate open on the top. It's easy to replace the ball joint, but the strut has the rusted on ball stuck in it and it's virtually welded into it... removing it will cause damage. So, looking for a new strut with this part #905603KA0A, however it has been discontinued and it's very hard to find one...

For anyone that either can't find their manual or just wants this spoon fed to them like I did:

LIFTGATE POSITION SETTING
The lift gate can be set to open to a specific height by performing the following:
1. Open the lift gate using the request switch or the Intelligent Key.
2. Pull the liftgate down to the desired position and hold the liftgate (the liftgate will have some resistance when being manually adjusted).
3. While holding the liftgate in position, press and hold the liftgate switch located on the liftgate for approximately 5 seconds or until 3 beeps are heard. The liftgate will open to the selected position setting.

To change the position of the liftgate, repeat steps 1-3 for setting the position of the liftgate.
Thank you so much!! You’re a lifesaver and saved me a trip to the dealership. Worked like a charm.

Yes, I had the same problem with the rear trunk closing right after it was open to the maximum point on its own. Once the rear trunk reach the top height I stopped it with my hand manually from closing any further and the door stopped. I then held down the close button located on the trunk door for approximately 5 Seconds, until I heard 2 beeps then I released it. That reset the liftgate back to normal.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this forum. Team work !
