After searching the forums I never did see what people figured out about the roof rails except for one guy who just put them on himself. Well a long story short you can add roof rails one dealer told me it's possible but another told me it wasn't. Well anyways while calling about adding roof rails after the fact to carry a kayak the parts guy was confused because he said I needed cross bars but I told him I didn't have roof rails. He informed my my vin said my car came out of factory with roof rails so I should bring it in so they could see if I had them or not because they apparently think I'm dumb and don't know what roof rails look like. So I take it in and they confirm no roof rails and the service manager says I'll get ya started thinking they are going to help me figure out why they weren't installed instead he comes back with a $1200 quote. So firstly this informs me that it can be done so I look on the Internet for junkyard parts find a set for $110 score!!! But first I was very unhappy with the service manager i said I thought it was suppose to be factory and he told me that the vin numbers always show wrong information for me that didn't add up. So before buying the rails from the junk yard I decided to give Nissan a call directly. The first person I talked to instantly transferred my case to a consumer affairs specialist and from what I read online they don't usually do much help. I get a call on a Monday and she said she needed more time to research my case she would call me Thursday. So I finally get the call and she's asking me all these question so I'm waiting for the sorry there's nothing we can do. But to my surprise she agreed with me and told me Nissan would be covering the cost of roof rails. So what's the point of this story 1 you can add roof rails with no mention of a reinforced metal piece 2 don't trust service manager and 3 call your dealer and ask if your pathfinder should have roof rails you may get lucky to!

You never said what model Pathfinder you have or the year. Early on, the base model "S" did not come with roof rails, so you may not be "missing" them at all. I'm not sure about the newer models. Anyway, the good news is that they can be added, as the following thread indicates:
http://www.pathfindertalk.com/forum/57-how-forum/11833-oem-roof-rails-installed-base-s.html

And yes, you will also need the cross bars (sold separately) in order to transport your kayak.

Sorry im a noob dont know how to edit my post lol. I saw that thread but I felt like I could add more of a clarification if it could be done. That was just one mans attempt to add them himself yes the bolt holes where there but he never did get the answer from nissan if they could or should be added. I infact have clarification from nissan it can be done since they are adding them to my car at no cost to me if they couldnt be added after the fact they wouldnt do that. So I guess along with his DIY and my answers from nissan people can rest assured there roofs arent going to blow off if they add roof rails :)I also wanted the people with out roof rails to call there parts department and ask if the VIN# says if there car should have came with roof rails or not worth a shot! Been viewing this forum alot and just never had anything to add but I felt like this could maybe help someone.

Mine came without roof rails too....thanks for heads up. Don't think I'll be as lucky as you. Just wondering who to call. They can come in handy sometimes.

Start with your dealer. If you get no satisfaction there, contact Nissan Consumer Affairs.

I have rails but not cross bars. I bolted some kitchen cabinet pulls from Lowes, holes line up perfectly and can hardly be seen, to the existing holes for the crossbars. These make perfect tie down points. I use some pipe insulation for 1/2 inch pipe as cross bars and bungee my kayak, latter, "for sale" Realtor sign post and anything else needing the room not offered by inside. Works great as the insulation is pinched under the load and protects the paint and stays put. I would bet some of those noodles the kids use as floats would work also but are not as rubber feeling.
