Hi. I'm looking to buy a high mileage pathfinder with 153,000 on the clock. I have someone who can recondition the engine. What else should I be looking for on the car that's vulnerable on these models? Cheers!
Main things to watch out for is the transmission cooler lines/radiator and timing chain guides.
The transmission cooling lines which go into the radiator had issues with leaking on early R51 models, which allowed coolant to get into the transmission lines causing what's known as SMOD (Strawberry Milkshake Of Death). The fixes were to either bypass the radiator completely, and use only the external cooler. Or replace the radiator.
The timing chain guides have a tendency to wear, which allows slack in the timing chain. With enough slack the timing chain(s) can slip. Which is no good, especially in an interference engine. Pistons slapping valves never has a good outcome.
