Our new SL has made a strange noise that sounds like someone dropping something metal (like chains) on the passenger floorboard. Before going to the dealer and getting the "you're crazy" look from the Service Department, I wanted to ask if anyone here has had a similar noise from their Pathfinder. There is absolutely nothing in the vehicle that could be causing this sound, but it has occurred three times.

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on your new ride but yikes! Hopefully its something simple, like a loose heatshield or flex pipe or broken weld joint, or maybe manufacturing debris that is lodged somewhere along the exhaust system that rattles in the right condition. Is yours 4WD? Maybe something is not seated right? Whatever it is, it sounds like an intermittent problem. Is there certain conditions when it happens? initial/cold start? going over rough pavement? turning left or right? Should be easily addressed under Warranty. If you do get it checked out, pls report back what the fix was. Good luck.

We have a 2022 SL Premium and the noise your describe does not sound familiar. Sounds like a trip to the dealer.....

We have a 22 Platinum and no noises. In fact, it may be the quietest riding vehicle we've ever owned including our previous 19 Armada which was already quiet.

Probably a loose heat shield or something along those lines rattling. Might crawl underneath and just kind of jostle things around. You may be able to find it yourself and avoid a dealer service department trip.

If it's something that you hear during acceleration, I had similar experience on my '19 Pathfinder, but it happened during the last year of my lease and I really did not have the time to take it to the dealership for them to look at it. I know this doesn't help you at all, but I didnt notice any decrease in performance and it wasn't loud enough to annoy me since I either had music playing or my windows were rolled up where I couldn't hear it.

Thanks for the replies! We will be traveling in the Pathfinder this weekend, and I will be trying to see what I have to do to repeat the noise. I'll check the heat shields before we leave.

Yes, I have the new 2022 SL 4WD and mine makes a loud vibration noise in the passenger floorboard when accelerating. I have only had it a week. We think we have isolated it to a large piece of plastic that covers the undercarriage of the car. This plastic is on both sides but the one on the driver's side is much larger. The middle of the plastic is very flimsy and not secured to any metal underneath. I am not even sure why this flimsy plastic is under the car. I have wondered if it was something the dealer was supposed to remove after delivery. Like it should only be on there to protect the underneath during transportation. I plan on making an appointment with my dealer or calling Nissan and asking about it. Rather annoying on such an expensive vehicle.

Interesting. We just drove ours about 500 miles last weekend, and only heard something briefly one time. Did not seem related to acceleration, as we were cruising on the interstate. Still trying to duplicate the noise. It is promising (in terms of solving the problem) that someone else has experienced a noise in the same area. Thanks for your reply!

I have the same vibration issues when driving 65 mph+ and gets worse the faster I drive. I do not feel it in the steering wheel or in the rear of the vehicle, but below the floor board. I just picked up my 2022 Pathfinder SL this weekend and noticed the vibration yesterday when driving on the interstate. I know it's not a wheel/tire balance or tire road force issue, because the vibration symptom is similar to the same vibration symptom I had with my Honda Passport. The prop shaft was replaced on that vehicle and took care of the vibration. Not sure if anyone else has experienced the same problem.

YES! My 2022 Pathfinder started making a clunking noise too...most noticeable when coming to a stop or accelerating from sitting. It sounded like a tin can popping in and out on the driver's rear floorboard. It was obnoxious. I went to the dealer and a tech went for a ride and immediately heard it. After the tech talked to Nissan ends up there is an issue with the sheet metal underneath on both sides near the rear wheel wells. Apparently the sheet metal was not manufactured properly and it was overlapping and buckling a bit under braking and acceleration....hence that tin can popping sound I heard. It was indeed the sheet metal popping in and out. Nissan advised the tech on the fix. It can occur on one or both sides. Basically he went in and tweaked the sheet metal on both sides...I think he added filler or something that filled that gap where it overlapped. It immediately fixed the issue. I told the dealer this should be a recall....they said it should be at least an advisory. Hope this helps!!!!!!!

Actually over the past couple of months ours has developed a creaking noise that seems to come from under the vehicle when doing slow maneuvering in a parking lot. Does not do anything once driving normal on the road.

Hey Doug,

Mine was not making any noise while driving either... then developed the sound while slowing and starting. I would suggest your dealer at least check out that sheet metal near the rear wheel wells. I am not a mechanic by any means but I would think if the metal is overlapping there could be odd sounds while turning. At first I thought my noise was coming from the recently installed hitch Nissan put on but then they found the sheet metal issue. My tech head to call Nissan headquarters to get more info on it. They definitely said it was an issue. Good luck!!!

Head back to Ontario from Florida in 3 weeks. Once home I will get it checked out. Thanks for the info.

Hello, my Pathfinder has been having a weird sound too. Were you able to find the issue and solve it? We currently have it at the dealer but since they haven't been able to replicate the sound, they can't do much. I appreciate any info. Thanks!

Hi Lilito,

my vehicle has made the noise since new.It does it once the transmission gets hot, only under torque…light torgue…not flooring it. 1st through 4th and will change with the shift of the transmission. It is currently at thedealer again for the noise…they have all heard it, but can’t seem to locate it. This time is the last time they will look at…they are going to swap it out this time…that is from the sales manager and finance manager as of yesterday. I think it’s the torgue converter or drive shaft. It will not do it while running it on the lift…it needs to be putting torque to the wheels. I also had kinked lines in my sunroof drain tube which caused a leak in the A pillar where it meets the roof. Also, a reason they might not hear it…the road noise…if you have the Toyo Open Country A46 tires…they are loud with road noise. I swapped mine out to pirelli scorpion AS plus 3…much more quieter ride and easy to pick up the knocking sound. Again…easier to make out the sound though…made more aggravating with 4000 miles in the truck…It took me driving directly there when it was hot enough and I drove the director of service and his head technician and they heard it and it was . I am 49 years old and have owned 33 new cars…plus rebuilt…on my own from used cars 3 transmissions 2 motors 4 rears numerous brake jobs. You are not crazy…the rattle is in there. I have driven friends cars to trouble shoot noises before…I am not a mechanic…my friends say I have OCD and dog ears. I bought a 22 S for my wife and it is absolutely perfect…not a single noise 5 months old 3400 miles. Mine is a 22 sv 1 month old 4000 miles and has been to the dealer 4 times. We drive her’s more because I get so annoyed at the difference between the two vehicles…you could never guess they were the same. I started to wonder if there is not enough transmission fluid in the trans…as I have the tow package which comes with the upgraded transmission fluid cooler…wondering if they didn’t compensate for the when they put the fluid in…can’t check it… It is not a loose heat shield, or the engine protectors, or the long plastic tubs protecting the lines…been through it all. I hope this helps this helps and keep me posted. Oh by the way…this is the first new car I have ever had a problem with…outside of brakes, oil changes and routine maintenance never a problem. I average 24,000 a year…lots of road-tripping with my 8 year old. I just need to know I’m safe and the vehicle is reliable. Again, keep me posted and hopefully we can help Nissan if there is a defect.

Ours had been making a noise which sounded like it was coming from under. This went on for about 4 months when doing slow tight maneuvers such as parking. Over the past week it has stopped and no longer makes the noise..... I had just taken it to the dealer about it but they can't fix what they can't hear. So will continue driving and see if it ever returns again..... weird.
