Hoppy and Simon D - did you figure out what the issue was

I have purchased the harness (3050) from the US and just waiting for the controller to turn up, It is not my trailer (borrowing a camper trailer from a friend) so it will make it hard to check all is working correctly before having the chance to get the trailer on the day of leaving for holiday.

I have had the towbar fitted from the selling dealer - when I called them to ask about the connector they knew nothing about it and even said there isn't one in the car. so not sure what they would have done about the wiring.

I have checked and connected the adaptor and harness together and all is ok from that point.

any help is appreciated not only from Hoppy or Simon D.

Thanks

Thanks a bunch for the mounting location and the info about the cap on the harness. Invaluable! I used the Tekonsha Primus, does not have multiple settings for pulling more that one size trailer. Mine came with two mount brackets, one metal that bolts onto the unit and a plastic one that snaps onto the controller and fits really close. The snap on part allows easy removal of controller to gain access to the fuses it blocks. Thanks again for the write up.

Sooooo... Am I the only one who went rogue and mounted the Tekonsha here?

/This was done well over a year ago
/I just found this thread
/I can remove it when not in use

First post. That is about where will go. I don't use it often so I clamp my P2 into a suction base cell phone holder on the flat in front of the gear selector. Turns out the P2 is about as wide as my iPhone 6 in an otterbox. I like it there because I can get to the override lever easy and I'm one of those that like she seat moved forward to where my knees almost touch the dash. And it's in about the same place on my Xterra. I plan to swap the controller back and forth.

Thanks for the info on this posting. Would never have located the connector under the steering Column. Great post

Got the job done in just over an hour. Now my 2013 PF Platinum has a nice Tekonsha P3 controller . Tested it today on a 4300lb TT. it locked up the electric brakes on first run. After a few minor tweaks to the P3 controlled very happy with the set up.

Thanks Guys

Hey fellow Aussies,

With a Tekonsha P3, were you able to fit the Tekonsha 3050 or 3050-P Nissan wiring adapter without modification?

The tow hitch was installed at the Nissan dealership so fingers crossed they wired everything through...

Hi guys,
Like many Australians, I contacted my Australian Nissan dealer where I bought the car from (and who fitted the Tow Bar). They told me that there isn't a factory fitted harness to plug in to, so I purchased a Teconsha Primus IQ with the generic wiring kit. Has anyone had any experience installing, all help gladly appreciated?

Paul

I have a 2014 Pathfinder with the 7 pin harness factory installed, I've towed my utility trailer with no issues using a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter; all the lights work great.

I also have a travel trailer that is equipped with electric brakes. I've located and successfully got the factory connect down from under the drivers side dash, it was secured with white tape and foam, no cap on it.

Now for the part that I don't understand, I bought a 3050-P wiring harness to connect to the pathfinder and my Tekonsha P3 and for the life of me I cannot get them together! I checked the 3050-P vs. the adapter Nissan gave me with the vehicle (the one that plus into the connector and gives you leads on the other end) and they look identical.
Attached is a picture of the connect under my dash.

Am I missing something or am I just an idiot?

Welcome to the forum.

Make sure you are not trying to connect the brake controller to the accessory connector, that is the one that matches the one with the lose cables.
The connector to the brake controller has some sort of adapter at the end that you need to remove and use the plug right behind it.

I did the same placement, but didn't mount, it just rests in the tray. When I am not towing, I just push the wire back up and all is hidden.

What is the gross weight of the trailers you folks are towing. Normally trailer brakes are for towing heavy trailers? Pathy s rated for 5000lbs?
I plan on towing my snowmobile trailer but it doesn't have electric brakes on it.my boat on the other hand does. But that only gets towed 2 miles down the road to the boat launch twice a year. One time in and another time out. I haven't even pulled it with the pathy yet. Next weekend will be the test.
justchecking... your trailer looks like it is nose diving in the front. You might want to raise it up a bit. Keep the trailer level as possible.

Trailers that need electric brakes generally come with them. I would guess that your snowmobile doesn't weigh that much, hence they probably are not needed. A weight distribution hitch definitely helps with the sagging due to the poor rear suspension on our Pathfinders.

Many of us with camping trailers are pulling 2000 - 4500 lbs.

kawikdogg7 - Yes it probably is nose diving a bit. There is a dip in the pavement there that collects water when it rains that makes it look worse. However I sold that trailer that summer and bought a hybrid that I tow around at around 5000 Lbs.
This summer we towed it about 2850 miles so far! My average MPG was about 10.4 MPG. The worst heading into the wind in South Dakota was about 8!
Altogether I have towed the 5000 Lber about 10000 Miles (we just passed 70000 total). The transmission didn't explode or anything. Other than the door handles on both sides breaking we have had no problems.

I use an equalizer hitch and airbags. I plan to see if the 2017 has stiffer springs and if it does I will install them. Mine sags in the back just picking up a few bags of water softener salt.

(I didn't think the hybrid had very good electric brakes for the first year or two. Finally I jacked up each wheel and had my daughter apply the manual brake lever. I found the factory missed one of the magnet wires so I really only had 3 of 4 working. Simple fix but that extra brake made a big difference.)

I installed my Tekonsha P3 using the optional adapter. It was pretty much plug and play, but it took me forever to find the plug under the dashboard. On my 2017 Platinum it was tucked way up under the steering column. I twisted my 6'3" self every direction under the dash and could not find it anywhere by looking. I had to resort to sticking my hands underneath the dash and feeling around. Finally, I found what seemed like a plug taped to a harness as described by others here. It was simply taped up with white tape, but not the sort of foam tape shown in pictures here, more like electrical tape. I pulled it down and it had the blank plug in it so I was pretty certain it was the right one.

For placement of my brake controller I found that either to the left or right of the steering column the lower dash surfaces are not straight. Either would cause a slightly crooked installation of the brake controller and it is supposed to be as straight as possible. I'm also a bit anal about drilling holes in my new vehicle. I like what others had done using the little tray area, but most had fastened it just below the climate controls. I decided that I won't keep it installed at all times, so when towing it will be attached with velcro to the bottom edge of the tray. I can still just fit my large hands in to connect things to the two plugs there.

Not a fan of using velcro for this application.
If the brake controller detaches, falls or suddenly moves your braking won't be effective or will be null.
If you suddenly have to reach to it to apply the brakes in a sway situation and hit it with your hand or if you are in an accident and it comes lose, you won't have control of your trailer brakes.
My 2 cents.
