Looking for advice here before I go ahead with purchasing a 2016 Jayco X213. Currently tow with a 2020 Pathfinder Rock Creek that tows up to 6,000 lbs (600lb tounge weight). Max weight of cargo & occupants is 1150lbs.

The Jayco x213 is 24ft long, dry weight is listed as 4,300lbs with a GVWR of 5,500 and dry hitch weight of 460lbs. Based on this even with a load I should be OK but I've been reading some people experience a hitch weight of well over 700lbs so would a WDH help with this?

Anyone have similiar expierence towing a larger camper with a PF?

That 23ft Jayco probably weighs in at 5500+lbs as is and will need a WDH. This is only going to leave you a few 100 lbs at best for cargo and people in the Pathfinder if you want to stay within the spec'd limits of the whole rig.

Thanks, that 5,550lb is the max though, right? I expect only ~500lb of gear and never fill the tanks before camping. Also I plan on using a WDH. Also the people in the car would be off of the payload not the towing I believe. Anyone here have experience towing something similar?

If you run the numbers carefully that 6000 towing capacity winds up including everything in the pathfinder as well. The max gross combined weight rating of the whole rig.

Can you assist me with running the numbers? I can't seem to find the total GW of the 2020 pathfinder. The door sticker only notes the combined weight of occupants and cargo (I believe this excludes driver) should never exceed 1149lbs. So if the camper is say 5,000lbs loaded, with 500-600lb hitch weight is that within limits?

It's all in your owner's manual section 20. 20-18 through 20-22 or so.

There are a ton of threads on towing as well.

The max GCWR is 11000. Subtract ~4700lbs for the weight of your pathfinder alone means 6300lbs is left over for everything. Subtract ~6000lbs for your camper, hitch, etc, you are left with 300lbs for occupants and cargo in the pathfinder. These of are rough numbers of course, so you can adjust how ever you see fit, but I'm thinking you will be right on the edge of the stated numbers.

I'm not the towing police by any means. I don't even own a camper! The topic interests me because my 70 something year old in-laws got suckered into thinking their 2017 Nissan Frontier was a suitable tow rig for a ~23ft Jayco Jayflight some years ago. Sure it could tow it based on numbers, but it's a stretch for long haul towing.

It's not only the weight. Travel trailers are like pulling a giant wind sail behind you. They will take you for a ride if you catch the wrong wind gust.

Thanks for your feedback it's appreciated. I'm viewing a few people on this forum who have hauled heavier campers but haven't given much feedback on multiple trips with it. Based on these numbers I think a few hundred could be taken off the camper weight as I won't fully load it but agree I would be almost near the max but most likely not OVER the weight limits. We only ever camp up to 2hrs away from home and never travel with any water in the tanks.

Thanks JayArras. I noticed that you mentioned you were towing near the max of your Pathfinder (believe you had a 5,000lb max). Can you let me know how your experience was with this? Based on my numbers it seems I may be doing close to the same (maybe ~500lbs off the max) so i'd appreciate your personal feedback based on your experience. We only ever camp up to 2hrs from home, not too many hills, never fill the water tanks, and generally only pack food, clothes, etc. for a weekend trip with a small child and dog.

I think you'll be fine if it's for small trips, as you say. The Pathy struggles on hills with a trailer and sags terribly without a WDH. Keep your speed down and do regular oil changes. Some of the towing capacity maxims are there for safety reasons as well as overall strain on your engine.

I have a 25' camper. 4300lbs. Towing with a 2018 PF with tow package. pulls great with a WDH. I wouldn't tow without one. Very easy to put on. And can find them very reasonable used.....
Happy Camping
