Had a Jiffy Lube visit at 20k and the tech was mentioning I should consider swapping out the front and rear differential, and transfer case fluids every 20k?? Uh no thanks.. but that visit did make me check out the maintenance guide and I was surprised to see the brake fluid should be changed every 20k.

Also - I was unclear if the manual was suggesting the CVT fluid needed to be replaced every 30k ? The manual put the NV200 taxi and Pathfinder Hybrid in parenthesis. I assumed it was only those vehicles being referenced, but later on at the 120k mark there was some maintenance required where it specified "Frontier Only" and "NV200 Only", so now I'm confused.

Any thoughts?

The the US service manual:

Transmission Fluid/Oil,
Differential Oil, Transfer Case
Oil
Visually inspect for signs of leakage at
specified intervals.
If towing a trailer, using a camper or
car-top carrier, or driving on rough or
muddy roads:
● replace the fluid/oil every
20,000 miles or 24 months.
● For these vehicles with a CVT
transmission, cube, Murano, Altima,
Altima Coupe, Maxima,
Rogue, NV200, Sentra, Pathfinder
(except HEV), Quest and Versa,
replace the CVT fluid every
60,000 miles or request the dealer
to inspect the fluid deterioration
data using a CONSULT. If the deterioration
data is more than
210000, replace the CVT fluid.

I use a brake fluid and a coolant tester from Amazon and see if I really need to change them.

I regularly tow a light weight trailer and only use a good synthetic oil and filter. I use royal purple. I'm still amazed at the puny size of the oil filter; Its obvious this engine was not intended for an SUV.

Lastly, I only plan on checking/changing my CVT fluid at 30k because I did the same for my Prius and it was black. That doesn't mean it was bad though.

Nissan switched to that tiny filter on the VQ engines in 2002. Probably because of the thickness of the heat exchanger that was added then. However the taller filter fits just fine with plenty of room to spare. I have always used the taller filters on my 2002 Maxima and my 2013 Pathfinder.

Short (new) filter part numbers:
Mobil M1-108
K&N HP-1008
(Mobil M1 and K&N are the same filter, same factory just different paint and labels)
Purolator L14612

Taller (old VQ30) filter part numbers
Mobil M1-110
K&N HP-1010
Purolator L14610
Lookup vehicles 1995-2001 Nissan Maxima

Taller and FAT (High capacity) optional filter that I sometimes use on my Maxima but often difficult to find:
Purolator L14619
Mobil M1-207
K&N HP- 2007
Lookup vehicles 1990-1995 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 (Lotus built LT5 engine)

This filter meets the specs of the correct filter. You can compare them for yourself here on the WIX Filters site.

On the subject of new CT fluid, I just found this: http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/transmission-fluid/automatic/synthetic-cvt-fluid/

It's mainly advertised as a Nissan NS-2 alternative but it's also listed as a NS-3 replacement. If it were anyone else I probably wouldn't give it much thought however since it's Amsoil, I might be using this when my Pathy hits 30k miles.

Lab Tested
AMSOIL lab testing also reveals AMSOIL CVT Fluid met, and in some cases surpassed, the protection and performance of Nissan NS-2 CVT Fluid:

  • In FZG wear testing (ASTM D5182), Nissan NS-2 achieved a 7 stage pass, while AMSOIL CVT Fluid significantly surpassed it with an 11 stage pass.
  • In the JASO LVFA Anti-Shudder Durability Test, AMSOIL CVT Fluid lasted six times longer, translating into improved anti-shudder durability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness.
APPLICATIONS
AMSOIL Synthetic CVT Fluid is recommended for belt- and chain-type continuously variable transmissions requiring the following:

  • Audi/VW TL 52180, G 052 180, G 052 516
  • BMW 8322 0 136 376, 8322 0 429 154, EZL 799A
  • Daihatsu Amix CVTF-DC, CVTF-DFE
  • Dodge/Jeep NS-2, CVTF+4®, MOPAR® CVT 4
  • Ford CVT23, CVT30, WSS-M2C933-A, Motorcraft® XT-7-QCFT, MERCON® C
  • GM/Saturn DEX-CVT, CVTF I-Green2
  • Honda HMMF, HCF-2
  • Hyundai/Kia SP-CVT 1
  • Mazda CVTF 3320
  • Mercedes-Benz CVT28, 236.20
  • Mini Cooper EZL 799A, ZF CVT V1
  • Mitsubishi DiaQueen CVTF-J1, CVTF-J4
  • Nissan NS-1, NS-2, NS-3
  • Punch EZL 799A
  • Shell Green 1V
  • Subaru e-CVTF, i-CVTF, Lineartronic® CVTF, K0425Y0710, CV-30
  • Suzuki CVTF 3320, TC, NS-2, CVTF Green1, CVTF Green 2
  • Toyota/Lexus TC, FE
SERVICE LIFE
AMSOIL Synthetic CVT Fluid should be changed according to your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations
