Coming to work this morning, I was driving behind a Nissan Xterra with an aftermarket exhaust, which sounded horrible.
It made me wonder, what has been your experience with an aftermarket exhaust on a V6 engine?
I don't think I ever heard a good aftermarket exhaust for a V6 engine.

I tried one on my 4.0L Frontier. Didn't do much but sound and actually lost some low-end. For the most part, the stock exhaust systems are tuned pretty well to deliver the best performance in the range we normally drive our vehicles. If you want to get more power at higher RPM levels, yes an intake and exhaust might help, but only in the higher RPM ranges and possibly at the expense of losing performance at the lower RPMs.

I've heard many great exhausts on V6 mustangs.

I've also heard many many nice sounding exhausts on Infiniti Gs and Nissan Zs

Really? I guess I want them to sound like the sound you get from a V8 engine. Lets remember that the engines for cars get tune differently than when using those same engines on trucks or SUVs.
