2019 engine & exhaust issues on cold start.

Carrie, I've noticed this on our 2019 SV model on cold starts if you happen to be somewhere behind the car when it starts. Almost like it's got an old school cherry bomb muffler on it. LOL It's only on cold starts. Other than that it's not overly loud from the exhaust at all. Only once or twice did I notice a misfire stumble on a cold start. These were very cold starts at close to zero deg F though. I honestly don't start or drive the PF often enough. It's the darling bride's ride. I do know what ever cold start misfire it has, it's not enough to set or store a malfunction code.

"Duct work around the catalytic converter". That's comical. Gawd I dislike most service advisers and managers.

These direct injected engines scare me (2017+ pathfinders only). Dunno if you've caught my other threads, but the best thing you can do is not extend your engine oil/filter changes too long. They blacken the engine oil so badly, I'm afraid to go much beyond 3000 miles between OCIs.

Thank you. It's been with the dealer since Friday. They are testing emissions and power train. Not impressed. Thinking of going back to a GMC.
Keep us posted.

You'd hate to have to trade it in, but trade in values are about at an all time high lately if you do.

That's a weird diagnosis for sure because there's 2 catalytic converters. One per cylinder bank, then a muffler and resonator or two.

My thoughts on the cold start misfires is it's a 'feature' of the direct injection. Are they caused by too much or too little fuel? That's anyone's guess with out a cold start diagnosis. It doesn't take a misfire hanging around too long to set a check engine light.

Is the dealer going to replace something? I'd be curious to know what parts they're going to throw at it if anything.

Went to pick up the car after 2nd cat and front section of exhaust replaced. Start up from cold and bam....still making the put put noise. Now they are checking the first cat for damage and then injectors. Over this!!
Good grief..

If you look up a parts diagram for the 2013-2019 exhaust system it's insane. 3 catalytic converters (one for each cyl bank and one downstream), 2 mufflers and a resonator built into the tailpipe section. If you add up all the parts is like $3000 worth of (OEM) exhaust system.

You don't happen to have a youtube video or whatnot of your startup noise?

Unfortunately I did not record this issue on phone. The dealer replaced the first cat as well now but noise still there. They are reluctant to check for a leaking injector based on the time it takes. Trying to find other causes before that as a last resort. Been 2 weeks without my car.
I actually sounds like you've got a great Nissan dealer. I've not had issues myself with mine, but I could guarantee they wouldn't do anything for me unless there were codes stored, a check engine light on or something obviously broken.

Just a somewhat odd noise on cold start, they'd send me on my way.

Seems so weird that it does it for 10min but doesn't store or set a misfire, lean or rich code.

I get it that some cold start misfires might not show up in a code, but in 10min, something should happen.

Me personally? I know it's not right, but with this level of frustration at this point, I'd give it hell that first 10 min and either break what's broke or get it to set some code.

I think that was the last we'll hear of her. Would have been great to know what the final prognosis was, if there was any.

Nothing. No codes thrown. They fired up a 2020 Rock Creek and it made the same noise. They are telling me it's a direct injector engine and the noise is normal. Now at 36k and out of warranty.
So weird. I haven't noticed the start up skip or miss on our 2019 in a long time, but I don't use it much at all. It's the bride's kid and pet hauler. Just did an oil change on it yesterday at 41800 miles. 3420 miles on the oil/filter and that oil was as black and nasty looking as if it had 13420 miles on it. In went Napa synthetic 5w30 and a Napa gold filter.
